Alcoholic partner

Hi, how do people deal with an alcoholic partner who does not want to get help yet.

Re: Alcoholic partner

Hi @Garden and welcome

I have experienced close relationships with alcoholics and have had substance abuse disorders myself. I drank to blackout several times a week for years. With that background, and knowing how I was when I was drinking, I think you know what I would say.

I do not believe you can reason with an active alcoholic. I think you need to dig deeper into your reasons for being there and start to think about what you're getting out of the relationship.

If you were your own best friend, what would you say to yourself?

Check back in soon. There are very clever and compassionate people here and you can get a lot of relief by talking things through.

Best, Rabbit 🙂

Re: Alcoholic partner

Hello @Garden ,

Welcome to the forums~

It is challenging to support someone with drugs and alcohol issues, especially when they do not want to get help yet. We have got some resources on the SANE Blog on supporting someone with substance abuse, which may be useful for you to take a read. When someone you care about is trapped in addiction, it can affect you, too. So, it is very important that you remember to take care of yourself Garden Heart

They need to hit rock bottom, try not to enable their behaviour. You can contact https://al-anon.org.au they are best suited to give advise as they also have partners and familly members with Alcohol issues.
