Alfred Hospital Mental Health Unit WardRobe

If you live in Melbourne and have clothes you no longer need you might want to consider donating them to the Alfred Hospital Mental Health Unit.

This info is from the hospital website:

Many of the patients who come into the psychiatry inpatient unit are admitted with only the clothes they arrive in, and some have no access to other clothing. So the Alfred Mental and Addiction Health team are launching a new project called the ‘WardRobe’.

The WardRobe, which is launching on Friday 6 November, is a walk-in wardrobe based on the First Floor Ward in our inpatient unit. The aim is to keep the wardrobe stocked with good quality pre-loved clothing, as well as new undergarments and footwear - so they’re available to our patients when they need them.

The WardRobe will be available not only to inpatients but all patients using our mental health service, including those who are under the care of our homeless outreach teams and community services.

To help make sure the wardrobe stays full, the unit are dependent on donations from our staff and community. All donations of adult pre-loved clothing in good, clean and wearable condition in all sizes are needed - particularly men’s clothing. A clothing bin is available at our psychiatry inpatient unit reception entrance for donations.

The Alfred is located at 55 Commercial Rd, Melbourne VIC 3004

Re: Austin Hospital Mental Health Unit WardRobe

That’s such an awesome idea. Are we allowed to drop clothes off now or do we need to wait until COVID restrictions are eased (like with op shops)?

Re: Alfred Hospital Mental Health Unit WardRobe

@jallo I suspect the 5km rule applies at present.

Note: It is the Alfred not the Austin Hospital (mucked up the original post heading - hopefully all fixed now).

Re: Alfred Hospital Mental Health Unit WardRobe

wow thats a great ideaSmiley Happy well done

Re: Alfred Hospital Mental Health Unit WardRobe

I meant are you accepting donations at the moment, op shops aren’t.

Re: Alfred Hospital Mental Health Unit WardRobe

@jallo  donations are being accepted now, this is the advice from the website as to where goods are to be taken and what items are needed.

Due to current restrictions, we are currently only accept donations via the donation bin located in the reception of our psychiatry unit.

We are unable to accept postage of donations, and do not have alternate donation drop off points at this time. If you are outside the 5km zone or cannot get to us please note will be accepting donations to the WardRobe project ongoing and would love to accept these in the future.

We greatly appreciate all the offers to donate and many of you have asked what can benefit our patients the most. Donations of pre-loved adult-sized clothing in good, clean and wearable condition in all sizes is needed.

We welcome donations of:

Shirts and t-shirts

Jackets, jumpers and cardigans

Pants

Shoes - we can only accept new shoes.

Undergarments - for hygiene purposes we can only accept new undergarments.

We are unable to accept:

Stained clothing / broken zippers

Revealing clothing or clothing with offensive slogans

Children’s clothing

Bedding / Manchester

Jewellery and make-up

To donate to the WardRobe Project place clothing in the donation bin located in our psychiatry unit reception. Enter Alfred Centre Lane via Gate 3 at The Alfred, and you’ll find our building opposite the visitor's car park.
